Stay and Play in Thurston County

Situated on the southern tip of Puget Sound, Thurston County is a collection of unique communities that blend small-town charm with big-adventure experiences. From cozy inns and lively waterfronts to curated markets and a diverse dining scene, it’s the perfect place to explore, unwind, and linger awhile.
Stay
Settle into Olympia’s West Side with a stay at the historic Marie, an 1892 home reimagined as a bed and breakfast. Its Queen Anne architecture makes it feel like a life-size dollhouse, with two suites in the main house and two private cottages for guests 17 and older. Each stay includes a personalized breakfast menu prepared by the chef and innkeeper.
Play
Olympia’s year-round waterfront Farmers Market has been offering fresh, seasonal produce while supporting local growers and small businesses for over five decades. The Market offers regional farm goods, pasture-raised meats, dairy, fruits, and vegetables including artisan foods like sauerkraut, preserves, charcuterie, seafood, spirits, and baked treats. Shoppers can also browse handmade jewelry, crafts, woodwork, and art from local vendors.
Nearby Percival Landing is one of Olympia’s three waterfront parks, set along the east side of Budd Bay. A popular gathering place for community events and celebrations, follow the 0.9-mile boardwalk for a perfect stroll.
Visit Insert Coin for more than 200 arcade games, a nine-lane ax-throwing arena, and fun for the whole family. From elevated bites to craft cocktails, and a 33-tap self-serve wall, there is something for everybody. Afterwards, there’s the Sugar Rush ice cream parlor for over-the-top milkshakes adorned with sweet confections.
Roughly 14 miles south near Tenino, family-owned Sandstone Distillery crafts small-batch spirits with custom retrofit equipment and plenty of hospitality. The tasting room features standouts like Sandstone Single Malt Whiskey, Stone Carver Bacon Whiskey, and a coffee liqueur made with Batdorf & Bronson beans.
Also, sample the Wild Heart Sipping Vinegars, perfect for shrubs, dressings, and marinades—and say hi to the distillery dogs.

Dine
There are plenty of reasons to stop by Olympia’s 222 Market to enjoy coffee and tasty treats from the Bread Peddler’s Stay and Play in Thurston County Bakeshop. Friday through Sunday, don’t miss Chelsea Farms Oyster Bar for fresh shellfish from the family farm located right in Puget Sound. Save room for gelato at Sofie’s Scoops.
Tucked off Martin Way East in Lacey, Bacco Trattoria Italiana may be easy to miss—but its authentic flavors make it worth finding again. Chef Riccardo Simeone, who grew up cooking with family in Gaeta, Italy, opened the restaurant in 2020. Enjoy house-made favorites like lasagna, gnocchi, and tortellini, along with veal, filet mignon, and fresh local fish. Seasonal specials, local brews, and an extensive wine list complement cozy indoor dining.
About three miles south of Olympia at Tumwater Craft District, Chef Joe Rumberger—known for his Bastard Pies food truck—opened a French-inspired bistro, Bar C’est L’eau. The name—French for “water”—nods to nearby Mount Olympus Brewery and reflects a blend of French tradition and Northwest ingredients. The menu ranges from morning crêpes and pastries to bistro classics like steaks, seafood, and Parisian-style gnocchi, paired with wine, craft cocktails, and local beer and cider. Check out Tumwater Craft District’s
other shops and eateries while you’re there.
