Peninsula Credit Union Names Business of the Year

Peninsula Credit Union (PCU) has been recognized as Business of the Year by the Shelton
Mason County Chamber of Commerce, receiving the community’s highest business honor for the second time –first received in 2014. Winning Business of the Year twice in 11 years is unprecedented for the award and reflects sustained, visible impact across Mason County and the Olympic Peninsula.
The award was presented at the Chamber’s annual gala and recognizes organizations that demonstrate exceptional leadership, service, and investment in the community. For PCU, the recognition underlines the credit union’s position as a trusted, member-owned financial cooperative helping people make their way through financial uncertainty and toward stability.
As the award was announced, the PCU team in attendance gathered on stage. “We live in a time of turbulence politically and economically,” said Jim Morrell, CEO of Peninsula Credit Union, in his acceptance speech. “The team behind me represents our entire Peninsula Credit Union Team that walk with people during financial celebrations and the times when it does not seem like there is a lot to celebrate. To help people improve credit scores, consolidate debt, to connect people to affordable financial services, and help people attain financial freedom.”
Morrell also stressed that the work and the recognition were the result of a practical service to everyday households across the region. “We are, as we have been for over 90 years, here to listen, serve, educate and care for everyone – for the 45% of our county who live at or around a household survival budget, from the indigenous peoples of our land, as well as our Mayan neighbors from Guatemala and Mexico, to everyone living on the Olympic Peninsula.”
He also underlined the essential nature of fair access to financial services. “Financial services are like the air we all breathe-but some should not smell fog, while others smell roses. As a financial cooperative entrusted with people’s hard-earned savings, we work to enhance the ability of all people to pursue economic freedom in the pursuit of happiness.”
Peninsula Credit Union credits the recognition to its members, board, team members, and community partnerships, as well as to the cooperative model which reinvests in people and places, not outside shareholders. Work underway at the credit union includes boosting access to responsible, affordable financial services, strengthening financial capability, and supporting all households working to build credit, manage debt, and plan for the future.
“On behalf of our Board and our entire Peninsula Credit Union Team, thank you for recognizing our efforts to support you and our entire community,” Morrell said.
