Teresa Lubovich, Founder and co-owner of Bright Heart Learning in Poulsbo, did not have a typical childhood. Growing up on a Mercy Ship, her life was spent traveling from African ports to European destinations learning with 75 other children shipmates about the countries they were visiting and their cultures. “I guess what I learned during my childhood adventures about other cultures is thread throughout my work,” said Lubovich.

While Bright Heart Learning does some typical tutoring and college test prep work, their mission goes beyond education. With students, parents, and their team, the secret sauce is connection. Compared to traditional tutoring and educational models focused on content, they forge connections that remove barriers to learning and enable students’ personal growth.

According to Bright Heart Learning, academic struggles are rarely just academic. Within their philosophy students need to feel safe, seen and understood. “We build emotional connection to build trust, so the student believes us when we tell them they are good at something,” Lubovich said.

Serving students across a wide range of needs, Bright Heart Learning builds a customized plan for each of them. They implement functional learning assessments that identify how a student learns best and determine the root causes of their learning struggles. They specialize in students whose brains learn differently including ADHD, dyslexia, being on the Spectrum and executive functioning support. “We recognize that some kids need to get their brain and body connected. We help them understand their body and regain their balance and rhythm,” said Lubovich.

Roughly half of their students now work with them online, giving families across the country and the world, including Australia, Spain and Canada access to their techniques. Recognized by the Wall Street Journal and other leading learning spaces for its methodology, Bright Heart Learning aspires to have their methods granted certification status so other educators can run their own tutoring/learning center in the model Lubovich created.
