Expanding Opportunity: Federal Broadband Investment Comes to Kitsap County

New residents moving to Kitsap County are choosing a community known for its natural beauty, strong neighborhoods, and growing access to essential services, including high-speed internet. That access is about to expand in a big way.

Kitsap Public Utility District (KPUD) is part of a major statewide effort to bring reliable, high-speed internet to more communities, thanks to the federally funded Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) Program. Recently, the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) approved Washington State’s final BEAD proposal, unlocking more than $1 billion in combined federal and state funding to expand broadband access across Washington.

Within Kitsap County, KPUD’s preliminary award will support fiber-optic broadband expansion to nearly 4,000 homes, primarily in rural and under-served areas. The project represents a $19.98 million investment locally, including approximately $14.98 million in federal funding and nearly $5 million in state matching funds.

For many households, broadband is no longer a luxury, it’s essential for remote work, online education, telehealth appointments, and staying connected to everyday services. This investment helps ensure more residents, regardless of location, have access to the reliable connectivity needed to fully participate in today’s digital world.

KPUD plays a unique role in making this possible. As a public utility, it operates an open-access fiber network, allowing multiple internet service providers to deliver service over the same infrastructure. This model promotes competition, improves service quality, and helps keep costs more affordable for customers.

Expanding broadband access supports not only individual households, but also local businesses, education, and long-term economic vitality. Whether you’re working from home, launching a business, or simply staying connected, Kitsap Public Utility District is continuing to invest in infrastructure that helps communities thrive.

In Kitsap, staying connected isn’t just about technology, it’s about opportunity.
